IPO profit calculator

Work out what an IPO investment would be worth at a listing or exit price you choose — after charges and an optional tax estimate.

Calculator

Optional — use reported band:
Prices (hypothetical)
What you pay, e.g. the final issue price if allotted.
A price you want to test — not a prediction.
Quantity
Whole shares only.
IPOs are bid in lots. Leave blank for any number.
Costs & tax (estimates)
Usually nil for IPO applications; enter any you pay.
Brokerage, STT, exchange & DP charges, GST.
Applied only to a positive net gain. Check current capital-gains rules for your situation.

Result

Enter a purchase price, an exit price and a quantity to see the result. Nothing is pre-filled.

Assumptions
  • You are allotted every share entered. IPO allotment is not guaranteed; in oversubscribed issues many applicants get nothing.
  • Prices are the ones you typed. They are not forecasts of the Jio Platforms issue or listing price.
  • Charges are flat amounts you enter. Tax is a simple rate on a positive gain only — real tax depends on holding period, slab, set-offs and current law.
  • Return % is net profit ÷ total cost (purchase value + buy-side charges).

These calculations are hypothetical scenarios for educational purposes only. They are not a forecast of the Jio Platforms IPO price, listing performance, allotment, or investor returns. An actual IPO price and listing price may differ materially.

How the calculator works

All maths happens in your browser; nothing you type is sent anywhere.

  • Purchase value = shares × purchase price.
  • Gross profit = shares × (exit price − purchase price).
  • Net profit before tax = gross profit − buy-side charges − sell-side charges.
  • Estimated tax = your tax rate × net profit before tax, only when that profit is positive.
  • Net return % = net profit after tax ÷ (purchase value + buy-side charges).
  • Break-even price = (purchase value + all charges) ÷ shares — the exit price at which you neither gain nor lose.
  • In “amount” mode, the amount is rounded down to whole lots (or shares) and any leftover cash is shown.

Worked example (hypothetical)

Suppose you were allotted one lot of 12 shares at ₹1,119 (the top of the reported band) and sold at a hypothetical ₹1,200, paying ₹40 in sell-side charges. Purchase value is ₹13,428, exit value ₹14,400, gross profit ₹972, and net profit before tax ₹932. If you entered a 20% tax rate, estimated tax would be ₹186.40, leaving ₹745.60 — a 5.55% net return. If instead the shares listed at ₹1,000, you’d lose ₹1,428 plus charges. Neither price is a prediction.

A note on tax

Gains on listed equity shares are taxed as capital gains. Whether a gain is short-term or long-term depends on how long you hold the shares, and rates, exemptions and surcharges are set by the Finance Act in force. Following the July 2024 Budget changes, short-term gains on listed equity were taxed at 20% and long-term gains at 12.5% above an annual exemption — but rules change, so confirm current rates on the Income Tax Department’s website or with a tax professional before relying on any figure. Charges such as STT and brokerage also apply when you sell.
